The idea behind this site is to share information with anyone in the Newburyport community who would like to be involved in helping improve Atwood Park. Currently the park has problems with dog waste and also just general maintenance. Many of us in the South End have either small yards or none at all and count on having the park as a clean and safe place for our kids to play.
I will keep this site updated with the latest news regarding the park whether it's local news or an announcement about the next kids' movie in the park. If you're web saavy and would like to volunteer to assist me in doing this, any help would certainly be appreciated.
During the past year, I've found that the way to maximize community involvement is by using an email list for communications rather than this website. I will continue to update this site periodically, but if you want to see everything going on as it happens, please subscribe to the email list at
Park Cleanup 2012Last Updated on 2012-04-22 22:38:50
So spring is upon us which means things are starting to happen again. Most of the discussion, as usual, happens via our googlegroups email distribution list. I wish it were easier to include that content here, but you're going to have to sign up for the group i if you really want to stay up to date. Again, that's located here:
On Saturday, 4/28/12, the city is having park clean up day once again. I'll be heading down to pick up leaf bags at 9am and can use any volunteers I can get to meet me at the park with rakes at 9:30. The park looks much better this year than it did last year, so I imagine with enough people, we can be done in well under two hours. Hope you can make it!
There are a few other things going on as well. Looks like the park will be getting a sponsor and... More »
Yankee Homecoming 2011 Kickoff Party at Atwood ParkLast Updated on 2011-07-19 00:00:00Last week, I was contacted by Lise Reid, the Newburyport Parks' administrator to let me know she wanted to organize events at parks around the city in order to celebrate national park & rec month as well as to kick off Yankee Homecoming. She gave me a date of July 30th (the day before YH officially starts) and explained the theme of "Rock Your Park". I was on vacation at the time and told her I'd get back to her once I got home and looked at what I could do with such short notice.
Earlier this year I'd sent an Atwood Park soil sample off to U Mass for an analysis with the goal of determining what could be done to improve the health of the grass and encourage growth in the bare areas. While I've raised some money to help (thanks everyone!), the treatment U Mass recommended was costly so I'd planned on doing something this summer to try to raise more... More »
Atwood Park soil sample results from U MassLast Updated on 2011-04-29 00:00:00In mid April, I collected a soil sample from the park and had it sent off to UMass for analysis to determine the best way to treat the park to improve the grass that is already there and to help prep the park for new grass seed in the barren areas. I've attached the results. More »
Park cleanup dayLast Updated on 2011-04-16 00:00:00April 16, 2011 was Newburyport's park clean up day. We had a pretty decent turnout to clean up Atwood Park. It didn't really look all that unclean to start with since we all work hard to keep it clean, but I think everyone was surprised at how many trash bags we managed to fill!
